Students wrote personal narratives under the instruction of professional writer Mr Paul Wood. These will be revisited later in the year, but we are sharing some with you now.
One morning out in the middle of the ocean of Alabama, it was foggy, cold and it felt like a shark was gonna just jump up and grab you right out of the water. I was with my two uncles and my dad and we were fishing right in front of a giant oil rig, screaming with loud horns like a tsunami siren.
We dropped our poles with live shrimp bait on it which felt really weird but we didn’t really care. I was the only one to cast further out than everybody else. I’m pretty happy I did that because after a minute or two my pole was screaming like a hissing monkey. I was reeling and reeling until I was really tired. I had to power through so I reeled harder than I’ve ever done in my whole ten years of living. One of my uncles tried to grab the big fish in the net. Finally, we got the fish up on the boat and it was a big Bull Red. It was maybe one or two feet long.
My dad and both my uncles were really proud of me, actually they were yelling and screaming randomly like elephants. I was also really happy I caught that fish because I get to share it with all the family I was staying with.
Of course I wanted to get another fish, smaller or bigger it didn’t matter, so I dropped my pole into the water again while everyone was waiting on the boat to try to catch another fish. Then, just like in one second I feel a little nibble on my pole so I reel in a little bit but the pole starts screaming. I think I scared everybody on the boat with the pole screaming. I was reeling not as much as last time so I think it’s gonna be a smaller fish but it was a pretty big sheepshead. I got it into the boat and I was super happy that I caught two big fish in 30 minutes.
We started heading home and we had realized that we were lost in the fog. It was so foggy we were a couple yards away from the rig and we can barely even see it so we definitely won't be able to see land. I was freaked out because I thought we were gonna have to call a rescue team. We saw another boat pretty close to us but we didn’t want to follow it. Finally we saw a little bit of land. Actually it was a dock for boats but we still didn’t know where we were so we went into the river mouth thing that had a little island in the middle.
We didn’t catch any fish on the little island so we kept going farther into the river mouth thing. We saw a house with wood docks at the end so we knew that we can figure out where we are. We figured out that we were in the exact same place that we launched. After we got the boat on the trailer we went to grab a little snack at the store. We got home and my mom said “we were so worried about you guys.” We told her all about what happened on the boat. After we talked to my mom I went to the water and threw net, unfortunately, I didn’t catch anything. I came back from that and took a big nap in my room.
